The Green Revolution is a cardio equipment retrofit company out of Ridgefield Connecticut. They retrofit spin bikes so that the bikes can create DC power. They then feed that DC power into a central grid-tied inverter so that the created energy can be converted into utility grade electricity and consumed by the gym utilities in order to reduce the gyms power consumption from their utility company. The Green Revolution is unlike the ReRev solution in that it has a mechanical element that is used to convert the kinetic energy from the flywheel of the spin bike into electricity.
Jay Wheelan is the CEO of The Green Revolution and has been there since early 2007. In that time we estimate that they have been able to attain somewhere between 20 and 30 customers with 20 spin bikes on average. If are estimates are close, there are approximately 500 active spin bikes creating fitness generated electricity using the Green Revolution equipment. Jay and The Green Revolution team have been very helpful to us at Fit for Green and like Hudson from ReRev, he has high hopes that proper monitoring enhancements and exploration of the gathered data can help to drive this market towards main stream adoption.
The nice thing about retrofitting spin bikes is that you can get hard core exercise enthusiasts on them and you get less of the casual exerciser like you’d typically see on the gym floor machines. What that means is we typically see these machines being driven fairly hard. Also, in speaking with some of The Green Revolution users we’ve found that retrofitting spin bikes often improves the user’s experience. Those improvement come from introducing a load level indicator and digital load set adjustments to each bike. This gives users a way to measure their work, which is something they weren’t able to before The Green Revolution retrofit.
At Fit for Green we are excited to work with The Green Revolution for several reasons. First, they are like us in that they believe that fitness generated electricity should be reclaimed and should also be used for educational purposes in efforts to help make our planet healthier. In addition to that, the nature of the spin classes offer a unique opportunity for monitoring. We can set high scores, averages, and goals for classes as well as individuals. Think of the gaming potential for this.
- What class in our gym set the record for most power generated and when did they do that?
- At the half-way point of the class how far are we from a record setting pace?
- Because the electricity is a standard measurement we could also do high for all 1-hour classes country or world wide
- We could also create a worldwide leader list for the highest producing individual spinner
Besides individual metrics we will have a blast with spin classes, especially when it comes to playing on the competitive nature of the typical spin class person and their support for the class. We look forward to working on this solution with The Green Revolution as new opportunities in this area present themselves.
