I had the pleasure of speaking to with Mike Taggett, the President of Hyman Dynamo, earlier this week. Human Dynamo is headquartered in Hurricane Utah. Mike like all of the other innovators in this space, shares our passion for fitness-generated electricity. Over the years Mike has designed several different machines including; Rocket Chair, Team Dynamo, and FireWheel. There is plenty of information available about these machines on his website. His most recent work has been around trying to tie electricity from the machine directly into the grid without having to run through a central inverter like many of the other solutions. Doing this, in a cost effective way, has been one of the big challenges across the industry.
All of the vendors / innovators that I have discussed so far have their own approach to how to harvest electricity from gym equipment. Mike’s approach is different because he has not only looked at how to harvest the energy but he has also studied the different types of equipment and has really put a lot of thought into the parts that go between the end users and the energy creation. If you’ll notice some of the equipment on his site you can see how the design reflects this effort. What I mean is that it’s not your typical elliptical or spin bike, instead the equipment is optimized to get the most power out of a human being.
Mike is a true innovator and I’m sure he walks around, like most of us in the space, wondering where to go next in order to continue moving these efforts forward. What keeps the hope alive is that together we can convince more people to see this untapped potential to not only capture otherwise wasted clean energy but also to educate people about energy conservation and ideally even motivate them to exercise more. We look forward to seeing Mike and the Human Dynamo power forward with their creativity and contributions to fitness-generated electricity.
